Assignment 1: The Solution
Due Week 10 and worth 50 points

Select one (1) of the two (2) problems from the list below and solve it. After solving, write a one to two (1-2) page paper providing a step-by-step explanation how the problem is solved as if you were explaining it to another person. Your explanation should have the following elements:

  • Put the problem in context.
    • What type of problem is it?
    • Which topics in this course is it related to?
  • Explain your choice of method of problem solving.
    • Were there alternatives?
    • Why did you choose the method you did?
  • Write out a step-by-step explanation of how the problem is solved as if explaining it to another person.

In addition to being graded on the aforementioned elements, you will also be graded on sentence structure and on capitalization / punctuation. The rubric which will be used to grade the assignment is given below.

  • Problems: Choose one (1).

1. The total cost, in dollars, of producing x units of a certain product is given by:

C(x) = 8x + 20 + x³/100

    1. Find the average cost, A(x) = C(x)/x.
    2. Find C’(x) and A’(x).
    3. Find the minimum of A(x) and the value xo at which it occurs.
    4. Find C’(x0).
    5. Compare A(x0) and C’(x0)

2. If R(x) = 52x – 0.5x2 and C(x) = 22x -1

    1. Find the total profit, P(x).
    2. Find the maximum profit and the number of units which will yield this maximum.
    3. The average profit is given by A(x) = P(x)/x. Find A(x).
    4. Find the number of items, x, for which the average profit is a maximum.

Write a one to two (1-2) page paper in which you:

  1. Solve the problem.
  2. Explain the choice of method for solving the problem.
  3. Write out the step-by-step solution with an explanation as if you were explaining it to another person.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Solve maximum-minimum problems using calculus.
  • Communicate information about solving math problems in writing
